Nitrates: Sodium nitrate is a natural salt and a major export of the West Coast of South America, from Chile and Peru. It is widely used in the chemical industry and in the manufacture of compound fertiliser, providing a base constituent for such as ammonium and calcium nitrate. Nitrate may be processed near its source in Chile to produce saltpetre (potassium nitrate) a white crystalline solid, shipped in bulk and used in the manufacture of explosives.Although given a reputation because of this, of being volatile commodities, both sodium nitrate and saltpetre are basically harmless and non-combustible, although when mixed with combustible material they can be easily ignited and may burn fiercely.
