– Handy Bulk Carriers: 20,000–45,000 tons deadweight. These are often referred to as ‘handysize’ as they can trade to most ports in the world, though 20,000 is about the largest size that can use the St Lawrence Seaway.
– Panamax Bulk Carriers: is the largest size that can use the Panama Canal. This is about 60,000dwt as the limiting lock width is just over 32 metres. This latter point is important as much of the ore trade is through the Panama Canal.
– Capesize Bulk Carriers: are 100,000 DWT up to 400,000 DWT and are used mainly for ore and coal on specific routes between well-equipped terminals.
– Valemax Bulk Carriers: 400,000 DWT Bulk Carriers for iron ore shipments.
