Houthi rebels launched five missiles at the MV Laax, a kamsarmax bulk carrier controlled by Athens-based Grehel Shipmanagement Co, marking a significant escalation in their aggression towards commercial vessels in the southern Red Sea. This attack on Tuesday was part of what is described as the ‘fourth phase’ of their campaign targeting maritime assets. Initially, it was reported that the 2012-built, 82K DWT MV Laax was struck by three missiles, but the actual number has been updated to five. Despite the intense assault, MV Laax sustained material damage but remains seaworthy, confirmed by an official from the maritime security firm LSS-SAPU, which is currently providing protection for the vessel. 29-May-2024

 

Athens-based shipping company Newport S.A. is embarking on its first project to enhance its collection of Japanese-constructed bulk carriers by commissioning the construction of three kamsarmax bulk carriers. Under the leadership of George Chatzis, Newport S.A. has discreetly completed negotiations with Japan’s Oshima Shipyard for the delivery of three kamsarmax bulk carriers, each with a capacity of 82K DWT, scheduled for 2025 and 2026. The cost of this project has not been disclosed by Newport S.A. Founded two decades ago and headquartered in Piraeus, Newport S.A. owns 17 bulk carriers, all constructed in Japanese shipyards, with additional affiliations in China and the Philippines. Newport S.A. and subsidiary Newport Chartering prefer Japanese-built bulk carriers. Newport S.A. and subsidiary Newport Chartering was established in 2004. Formerly, Newport S.A. and subsidiary Newport Chartering were concentrating on handysize bulk carriers. After 2016, Newport S.A. and subsidiary Newport Chartering acquired five (5) panamax and one (1) kamsarmax bulk carriers. Newport S.A. and subsidiary Newport Chartering has been on a slow but constant fleet expansion since the beginning of 2018. In 2018, Newport S.A. and subsidiary Newport Chartering acquired sistership of MV Lausanne (ex MV Medi Lausanne) 2006 built kamsarmax bulk carrier 83K DWT MV Ponente from Japanese shipowners. Initially, George Chatzis-led Newport S.A. and subsidiary Newport Chartering mainly focused on handysize bulk carriers. Lately, Newport S.A. and subsidiary Newport Chartering has been operating in panamax and kamsarmax bulk carriers. Newport S.A. and subsidiary Newport Chartering admires Japanese built bulk carriers and all the company’s fleet were constructed at Japanese shipyards. Greek shipowner and operator Newport Chartering Ltd. was established in 2004. Athens-based Newport S.A. and subsidiary Newport Chartering acquired its fourth bulk carrier in a year. In March 2020, Transocean Maritime Agencies sold another 2008 built panamax bulk carrier 76K DWT MV Omicron Atlas (ex MV Atlas B) to Athens-based shipowner and operator Omicron Ship Management. The Oshima Shipbuilding-­built MV Ascanius falls into Newport S.A.’s fleet profile. Newport S.A. prefers Japanese built bulk carriers. Currently, average benchmark prices for vintage panamax bulk carriers are at their lowest since summer 2017.
